Management of therapeutic plasma exchanges by caregivers

Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is a procedure used to remove a pathogenic substance from the blood, or to provide a missing substance, or to obtain immunomodulatory effects by plasma separation from other blood compounds in an extracorporeal circulation. Connecting, monitoring and disconnecting a TPE circuit is a nursing act on medical prescription, depending on R4311-7 article of the french public health code. The aim of this article is to review TPE indications in intensive care, techniques used, as well as complications monitoring and prevention.
