Liver transplantation is a life-saving treatment for cirrhosis associated with multiple organ failure. This review summarizes some of the main findings of recent studies related to this complex medical and ethical issue. It underlines the crucial role that intensivists can play to identify potential candidates for liver transplantation in order to radically improve their survival.
