Interest in Quality of Working Life and Working Conditions (QVcT) within hospitals continues to grow. This increased attention is linked to healthcare reforms and organizational changes and consequences on attractiveness of care professions and difficulties in retaining staff. However, despite its importance, QVcT remains a poorly understood concept. It is most often reduced to fragmented or peripheral measures that do not address the core working conditions.
From a work psychology perspective, QVcT is situated within a political and regulatory framework. It draws on theoretical contributions and is implemented through structured approaches aimed at transforming work. Empirical research conducted in hospitals, particularly in intensive care units, highlights the specific characteristics of caregivers’ working conditions, which must be taken into account due to their direct impact on psychological health, quality of care, and intentions to leave the profession. The implementation of a QVcT approach therefore represents a relevant and coherent response to organizational and occupational health challenges in the healthcare sector.
