The need of renal replacement therapy for the treatment of acute renal failure may cause life-threatening complications worsening the short and long term prognosis of critically ill. This review summarizes the common complications associated with renal replacement therapy and assesses the potential therapeutic interventions and dialysis strategies to avoid or minimize this risk in order to improve patient’s health.
