Abstract

The use of neuromuscular blocking agents in the intensive care (ICU) patients should be closely evaluated before and during their administration. Nurses play an important role in the prevention and detection of complications related to dorsal decubitus and muscular paralysis. Additionally, nurses’ role in implementation of specific precautionary measures in patients treated with neuromuscular blocking agents is essential, including neuromuscular stimulation surveillance, early detection of critical illness polyneuropathy and myopathy, and prevention of psychological risks. Care should be carried out by trained professionals following written protocols established by all the collaborating actors including physicians, nurses, and physiotherapists. Evaluation of the efficiency of such measures is necessary.
