Music therapy principle is based upon a holistic approach through the stimulation of sensory, cognitive, behavioral and psycho-social aspects. Music therapy improves physiological parameters such as heart rate, respiratory rate, and blood pressure.
Music therapy via specific software or trained practitioners is increasingly used in adult and neonatal ICU. This review presents the indications and the effects of this approach: anxiety and pain management in intubated patients. The experience in pediatric intensive care unit is still embryonic.
An observational study including 21 children suggests that the implantation of this technique is possible in the PICU during the daily procedures such the toilet.
