Abstract

Objectives: Pediatric intensive care required competencies in pediatric care as in intensive care. The aim of this survey was to provide an overview of the education and training of nurses as their perception on their skills and activities in French pediatric intensive care unit (PICU).

Material and methods: Nurses from 34 on the 41 PICU in France were invited to fill an online survey with 22 questions between June 2020 and March 2021.

595 nurses participated to this survey (response rate of 51%) and 95% considered that their initial education was not sufficient to work in a PICU and required an initial complementary training. This formation was at least of 4 weeks for 55% (313 nurses). Two third (381, 64%) consider that it required between 1 and 2 years to be confident in care in PICU.

This survey highlight the difficulties to work in a PICU because of a large variability of patient and care. There is an urgent need to standardize the training of nurses on the specificity of critically ill children in PICU.
