Abstract

Background:

Delirium and iatrogenic withdrawal syndrome are frequently observed in pediatric intensive care units. Their detection is a challenge. An assessment scale (SOS-PD) was published in 2018 and a French translation was published in 2021.

Objective:

Validation of the French version of the SOS-PD scale in real-life conditions in pediatric intensive care unit.

Methods:

Observational, prospective study conducted in two pediatric intensive care units from 15/11/2021 to 15/02/2022.

For each patient, assessments were performed independently by two caregivers at the same time away from care.

Inter-observer reproducibility was estimated by a weighted kappa coefficient and an intra-class correlation coefficient.

Results:

Forty-two patients were included, 73 pairs of assessments were collated.

As for iatrogenic withdrawal syndrome, weighted kappa coefficient was 0.82, 95% CI (0.63-0.97), p < 0.001 (excellent agreement) and intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.92, 95% CI (0.73-0.97), p < 0.001 (excellent correlation).

As for delirium, weighted kappa coefficient was 0.86 95% CI (0.71-0.97) p < 0.001 (excellent agreement) and intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.92, 95% CI (0.86-0.95) p < 0.001 (excellent correlation).

Conclusion:

The French version of the SOS-PD scale is valid and reproducible.
