Abstract

The recent outbreak in pertussis cases in 2024 outlined the potential severity of this infection among young infants. Since January, 23 children died, including 20 who were less than 1 year of age. Pertussis is a respiratory infection caused by a bacteria, Bordetella spp, which classically displays benign symptoms in adults and older children. More severe cases, sometimes labelled as “malignant”, may occur in young infants. These children present with respiratory distress and pulmonary hypertension that require critical care. This update focuses on the specificities of malignant pertussis and its management in pediatric critical care unit.
