Severe vitamin deficiencies

The prevalence of vitamin deficiencies is underestimated. Risk factors for these deficiencies should be recognized in the intensive care unit. Some among these deficiencies can be fatal including Wernicke encephalopathy, shoshin beriberi, and scurvy; however they may recover dramatically with appropriate supplementation.
