This review focuses on extracorporeal treatments for poison removal, as recently defined by the EXTRIP workgroup. Since many years, numerous techniques and/or devices have been developed and proposed in poisoning context, mainly hemodialysis, hemoperfusion, hemofiltration, exchange transfusion, and more recently, albumin dialysis. We overview successively the toxicokinetic and toxicodynamic characteristics of poisons that could limit the efficacy of extracorporeal treatments, depending on the method used. Operational parameters to optimize poison removal for each technique are described. Finally, main indications are discussed.
