Abstract

The FEMMIR group was created in 2019 to work on gender questions in intensive care: women-men equality, discrimination and violence experienced by women.

The first step of its work was to describe the situation: the number of men and women practising intensive care is quite similar, but the number of women in key positions is low (head of unit, PhDs, congress speakers, experts interviewed in media); furthermore many women in the field have experienced gender-based discrimination, sexist behaviours, sexual harassment or sexual violence.

The second step was acting towards gender equality and against disciminations: commitment towards parity in the French Intensive Care Society commissions, congresses and and journals, creation of a list of women experts, publications of research articles on gender in patients or practicioners, courses on these matters to intensive care professionals and students, social media communication, creation of inter-speciality and international network on these topics.

The group will continue and strengthen its actions in the years to come.
