Abstract

Meningitis and encephalitis are severe neurological syndromes associated with significant morbidity and mortality. We review the management of adult patients with meningitis and encephalitis in intensive care units, highlighting the importance of an early multimodal approach to the diagnosis of meningitis and encephalitis in the ICU, with the help of advances in molecular biology and neuroimaging, which must lead to an early and appropriate probabilistic treatment.
